Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

How long does counselling last for?

Each session lasts for an hour.

Sessions are usually weekly but we can be flexible and have them more spaced out. We look together at what’s best for your needs.

I’ve worked with some people short term, focusing on a specific problem or issue. Others choose to explore something over a longer period of time. We have ongoing reviews as to what’s helpful for you and what you would like to work on as we continue.

How can counselling help with anxiety?

How can counselling help to reduce anxiety?

Everyone is different and your own experience of anxiety is what matters.

We would look at what we could work on and agree what you’d like to focus on. If it’s reducing the levels of anxiety, we could be looking at strategies, dealing with the immediacy to soothe some of the stressed feelings in your body.

Having worked on what anxiety is like for you, the therapy may shift to understanding why you feel like this. Generally this raises awareness, and supports the discovery of helpful coping strategies.

For you the choice may become what you can let go of or want to change. That might include work on any past or limiting beliefs.

Often the growing understanding of our own processes helps us heal, feel empowered and enjoy life more.

Is counselling available for young people?

Is counselling available for young people?

I offer concessionary rates to help young people and students access counselling.

As a counsellor in a University Wellbeing Service, I have experience of working with a range of challenges and struggles faced by young people and the possible impact on mental health and emotional wellbeing.

In addition with students, there may be issues with the transition from home to independent living, making of new friends,  and academic or exam pressures.

It can help to talk about what you can do to start to feel better.
